Initially digital printing machine are divided into two major categories based upon its quality and function. The categories are as follows:

1. INDOOR :
   • Print with high quality or known for Photo Quality.
   • Place indoor such as banner, photo, poster, or any ads in booth or stand in mall.
   • Using water based ink. Therefore, it is not weather proof (against sun or rain). Even you use  pigment ink, you cannot put the printout more than 1 month outdoor.
   • Printing price is expensive.

1. OUTDOOR :
   • Initially the printing quality is lower than indoor, but future enhancement able to print with high resolution.
   • Initially used outdoor such as billboard, baliho (using temporary frame such as bamboo), neonbox, and car signage. However, with new technology people use it indoor due to it's high resolution and low price.
   • Using Solvent or UV ink. Thus it can stand against weather (sun light and rain). The durability depend upon ink lightfastness / quality and media quality.
   • Printing price is cheaper.

As the outdoor machine technology become more advance, the printout quality also increase (near photo quality resolution). Therefore, more company starting to use outdoor machine even in indoor. This technology is back by leading print head manufacturer such as SPECTRA, KONICA MINOLTA, EPSON, SEIKO and XAAR.
